East Joliet Fire Protection District
General Obligation Bond Referendum March 17, 2020 Information

Press Release – January 30, 2020

The East Joliet Fire Protection District today announces upcoming referendum on March 17, 2020.

The East Joliet Fire Protection District today announces a ballot initiative on the March 17th, 2020 General Primary Election seeking support from the community for a 15-year $3,000,000 General Obligation Bond Referendum for the use of purchasing emergency response vehicles, improve and equip fire stations, pay outstanding debt related to equipment acquisition and fire station improvements. It is the District first proposed tax increase in 17 years. For the average single-family home in the East Joliet Fire Protection District, it would be $87 annually or .24/day. A General Bond Obligation is only a temporary raise in taxes during the duration of the bond. Once the bond has been repaid, taxes will return to the normal tax rate. The Bond CAN NOT be used for personnel, hiring, salaries pensions or benefits. Despite our continued efforts to reduce cost and operate efficiently, the District is subject to the tax caps, unfunded mandates, potential loss of territory, and potential tax freezes. Constant efforts are being made to increase and find new revenue streams and cut costs. Residents expect and deserve prompt, efficient responses to their emergencies with highly-trained personnel and functional equipment.

Sincerely,

Fire Chief Kirk Kelly
